Rapunzel is a Fabletown resident who was part of the group of Fables at the Last Castle in the Homelands and was present at their Remembrance Day for the fallen warriors. Rapunzel was placed in a tower by Frau Totenkinder, as punishment for sleeping with a prince.
As an effect of the curse, Rapunzel's hair grows at a rate of four inches an hour. Because of this she has to follow strict conditions to prevent any mundies from noticing the fast growth. Joel of the Crow Brothers gives her three haircuts each day. The hair is donated to make wigs, using the guise of her hair coming from many girls.
It is unknown if she realizes Totenkinder was the witch that cursed her. It was revealed that Cinderella's Fairy Godmother showed Rapunzel's prince the way to the tower she was kept in to spite Frau Totenkinder. She is also hinted to be the one who prevented him from reuniting with Rapunzel when she came looking for him.
In Fairest, Rapunzel's story begins just before the events of Fables, in early 2002. Rapunzel received a paper crane message telling her that her children are alive, and she must return to Japan to find them. This spurned her retelling of her story from the Homelands.
Frau Totenkinder kept her locked in her tower, but when she found Rapunzel sleeping with a prince, Rapunzel was cast out. She found out she was pregnant, but found she was rejected by everyone who knew her to be a witch's apprentice. Left alone, Rapunzel went into labour in the woods and would have died if had an unknown woman not assisted with the birth. During the birth, the woman gave Rapunzel a drugged apple and stole Rapunzel's twin daughters away after telling Rapunzel her children were dead. She never saw the children again, but spent the next few centuries pursuing every possible sighting of twin children.
Back in the present, Rapunzel finds her ex-girlfriend Tomoko, who now runs a Japanese equivalent of Fabletown in Tokyo. Through her friend's help she's eventually at least to bring some peace between those whom thought she betrayed them. But, its heavily hinted that Frau Totenkinder convinced Joel to have her memories erased for fear of having to confront an old enemy (heavily hinted to be Cinderella's Fairy Godmother).
To date, it appears she's completely forgotten everything. Its never stated what became of her Prince or her children.
Rapunzel is a driven person, who still hopes to find her daughters one day. She's friendly, although she tends to stick to herself, her closest friend being Joel.
- Rapunzel is the titular character of the Brothers Grimm tale Rapunzel
